Ernestine Cannon for Ernestine Salerno – Monumental Red Glazed Ceramic Vase, Italy, 1950s–1960s
An exceptional sculptural ceramic vase designed by Ernestine Cannon and produced by her renowned Ernestine Salerno workshop in southern Italy during the 1950s–1960s. Combining Mediterranean ceramic traditions with the refined modernism of the postwar period, the piece stands as a remarkable example of the artistic language that made Cannon one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Italian ceramics.
The vase is distinguished by its elegant, elongated silhouette. A generously rounded body rises into a slender cylindrical neck, creating a striking balance between volume and restraint. The form possesses a quiet monumentality, allowing the extraordinary glaze to become the central visual event.
A rich, high-gloss red glaze envelops the surface, ranging from deep oxblood and garnet tones to brighter crimson highlights. The glaze pools and thins subtly across the contours of the vessel, creating depth, movement, and a luminous sense of vitality. These nuanced variations reveal the hand-crafted nature of the piece and the sophisticated firing techniques for which the Salerno workshop became celebrated.
The original Ernestine Salerno – Italy label remains attached to the underside, confirming authentic workshop production.
About Ernestine Cannon
Born in the United States, Ernestine Cannon (1922–1995) settled in Italy after the Second World War and established the Ernestine Salerno workshop in 1948. Her work played a significant role in introducing contemporary Italian ceramics to an international audience, particularly in North America. Cannon's designs were sold through prestigious retailers including Neiman Marcus, and in 1951 she received the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award, an honour rarely bestowed upon a ceramic artist. Today, her works are represented in important public collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art.
Her ceramics successfully bridged traditional Italian craftsmanship and modern design, creating objects that remain highly sought after by collectors of mid-century decorative arts.
