Product description
Enfilade / Sideboard, Art Deco, Oak, circa 1940 – France Exquisite Art Deco piece of furniture attributed to Charles Dudouyt (1885-1947), one of the finest French furniture makers of the first half of the 20th century. Its simple structure features two large doors on the sides, separated in the middle by four registers with a mixed-linear front. The design is completed with a mirror with rounded corners. This piece of furniture features doors crafted in an extraordinary Brutalist-style design. Each door is shaped like a double molding, with a carved border in four aisles in the center. The original gilt-bronze handles appear in this area. They are striking thanks to their circular shape. Inside, there are two shelves for plenty of storage space. The four drawers in the center also feature a very original design, with impressive curves in their mixed-linear profile. The use of oak wood is a complete success, with minimal varnish applied to reveal the beautiful grain. This is best exemplified by the checkered top, achieved by combining the grain pattern. The entire piece is raised on richly carved wooden legs, also in a Brutalist style. The piece exudes quality in every aspect of its design and construction. It displays characteristics typical of Brutalist furniture, such as its restrained silhouette and pronounced geometric forms. About the author: A major figure in early 20th-century design, Charles Dudouyt (1885–1947) transformed the aesthetic of French design from elaborate classicism to a more modernist sensibility. Born in 1885, Charles Dudouyt began his artistic career after studying at the Germain Pilon school. He paints, draws, and makes a living illustrating publications, notably for Calmann-Levy and the Assiette au Beurre. In 1918, upon his return from the war, he designed and commissioned lanterns, lampshades, and various decorative objects with his wife. This led him to establish L'Abeillée, a then-fashionable rustic-style furniture factory in Pontoise in 1920. He moved to Paris in 1933 and moved away from French classicism, embracing more refined contemporary forms. His style found parallels with the craftsmanship movement, characterized by an honest approach to simple materials such as wood. Dudouyt's move to Paris coincided with a more ambitious production scale; he shifted from producing decorative objects to large furniture sets that included tables and chairs. Opting for a contemporary style, he founded Gentilhommière, which included a workshop and a shop. After his death, his son Jacques Dudouyt continued the Gentilhommière business until 1960.
