Emiel van Moerkerken, also known as Emile van Moerkerken (Haarlem, August 15, 1916 – Amsterdam, March 6, 1995), was a Dutch (surrealist) photographer, filmmaker, and writer. Van Moerkerken is considered one of the most important Dutch surrealist artists of the 1930s and 1940s.

For this photograph, an "Ideal Portrait," as he called it, he used 13 different negatives, from which he made 13 prints on top of each other, on the same piece of photographic paper.
Thirteen images were taken of the woman in the photograph, all 13 of which were used in the later construction of her true self.
