The Stressless armchair by the Norwegian company Ekornes is among the most influential pieces of seating furniture of the twentieth century. While many Scandinavian designers in the 1960s and 1970s emphasized minimalist design, Ekornes opted for an innovative combination of design, technology, and ergonomics. The family business was founded in 1934 in Sykkylven, a region known for its high-end furniture industry. With the introduction of the first Stressless in 1971, Ekornes set a new standard for comfortable living. The Stressless was developed based on a simple concept: an armchair should adapt to the user, not the other way around. Thanks to the innovative tilting mechanism, the chair moves naturally with the body and provides continuous support to the back, neck, and shoulders. This revolutionary comfort made the Stressless a worldwide success and laid the foundation for one of the most recognizable furniture brands from Scandinavia. Millions of units have since been sold, and the armchair is considered an icon of Norwegian design. This example features the early chrome-plated steel tubular frame, a characteristic design from the first generation of Stressless armchairs.
