Efraín Callisaya – “Chaski” (2005) Marble sculpture
Marble sculpture by Bolivian artist Efraín Callisaya (1963). The work Chaski refers to the legendary messengers of the Inca Empire. These fast and highly trained runners formed a relay system along the extensive Inca road network (Qhapaq Ñan) and ensured the rapid transmission of messages, quipus, and valuable goods over great distances. With this sculpture, Callisaya honors this historical figure from the Andes. In a compact, powerful form, he translates the movement, discipline, and significance of the Chaski within Inca culture.
Callisaya is a Bolivian painter and sculptor who studied at the Escuela de Artes Hernando Siles (UMSA) and the Escuela de Maestros Andrés de Santa Cruz. He has been exhibiting in Bolivia and internationally since the 1980s. His work is strongly connected to the landscape, culture, and history of the Bolivian altiplano.
