Ed Mieczkowski
"Pook" – Unique Spatial Object (1997/1998)
Description of the artwork:
The object offered at auction is an exceptional three-dimensional wall sculpture by one of the key figures of the American Op Art movement, Ed Mieczkowski. This work represents the essence of the artist’s exploration of perception, geometry, and color. Created using polychromed aluminum, wood, and paper, the composition is based on a dynamic arrangement of overlapping rings and segments that generate an illusion of movement and depth.
Mieczkowski’s signature precision and bold color contrasts—ranging from intense reds and yellows to cooler blues and violets—make the object visually “activate” as the viewer changes perspective.
Provenance and uniqueness:
This piece holds significant collector’s value due to its personal dedication by the artist. On the reverse, there is a handwritten inscription:
"For Connie + Peter Wexler. With gratitude and joy in a new friendship", dated July 26, 1998—the wedding day of the recipients.
Peter Wexler was a distinguished American set designer and artist, which further connects this work to the elite circle of the New York art scene of the 1990s.
