Set of nine original Domus chairs by Ilmari Tapiovaara, designed in 1946 for the student complex Domus Academica in Helsinki. Four chairs still have the original Knoll International sticker (Belgian license production).
Full wooden version: solid birch frame, curved plywood seat and backrest, back attached with three screws. Beautiful warm honey color with flame pattern in the wood. One chair is a different version with a darker backrest and two small metal plates at the front.
Condition: used vintage condition with patina. Frames sturdy, all chairs fully usable. Not restored or refinished, so original finish with scratches, small dents and discoloration appropriate for its age.
Defects:
One chair has a piece missing from the front edge of the seat.
One chair has a tear and damaged edge at the front right of the seat.
Some seats have light scratches or superficial delamination at the edges.
All defects are shown in the photos.
There is a tenth chair whose backrest is loose. All parts are present, it is a matter of re-screwing or gluing. This comes free with the complete set, or separately for a small fee.
Dimensions approximately: height 78 cm, width 57 cm, depth 52 cm, seat height 44 cm (measured on one chair, small differences possible). New price at Artek is currently approximately 900 euros per piece.
Offered as a set of 9, but partial sale is negotiable: per two, four or six chairs is also possible. Send a message with the desired number, and I will make a price. I prefer to sell the labeled copies and the deviating version within a set. Pick-up possible, shipping via Whoppah courier.
