For the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, David Hockney created this composition depicting a swimmer in the ripples of the water, using a montage of 12 Polaroids. Hockney is known as an abstract or Pop artist. His poster is representative of his photographic experimentation in the 1980s, when he began incorporating Polaroids into his work. Initially used as studies for his paintings, he later used them as art in their own right, arranging multiple images into larger composite works, as seen in this poster. Hockney's poster also recalls his early acrylic paintings of California-inspired swimming pools.
