Dining set, table and four chairs, inspired by Hans Olsen, Scandinavian Modern, 1960s – Denmark
Exquisite dining set with a round extendable table and four teak chairs, closely following the design of Hans Olsen's "Roundette" set for Frem Røjle, an icon of mid-century Scandinavian modern design.
From its inception, the design was conceived as a sophisticated solution for small spaces, an objective pursued by its designer throughout his career. It is a simple yet sophisticated design, with clean, straight lines. The chairs, with only three legs, become sculptural pieces that fit perfectly under the tabletop, and their backs adapt to its contours, creating a compact and visually refined set. Their organic and ergonomic, yet elegant, form is characteristic of the style. The contrast between the warmth of the wood and the elegance of the leather upholstered seat is striking. The table has an extension that transforms it into an oval-shaped tabletop, which folds in half for storage inside.
About Modern Scandinavian Style and Design
When we refer to Nordic style or Scandinavian design, we are talking about the countries of Northern Europe, specifically Sweden and Norway, but also including Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. This style is characterized by its functionality, utility, formality, minimalism, timelessness, and durability, as well as the use of local and environmentally friendly materials, such as wood. The stylistic elegance we know today arose from the influence of early 20th-century decorative movements (Art Nouveau or Jugendstil) and the simplicity and purity of the interwar artistic movements (Constructivism, De Stijl, the Bauhaus, etc.). The 1930 Stockholm Exhibition was a significant landmark, where designers blended local materials with modernity to create comfortable and luminous spaces.
The concept of “Scandinavian design” was coined in 1954, following a North American exhibition of the same name that promoted both the lifestyle and interior design of the Nordic countries.
