An adjustable dining table manufactured by Metz & Co., Amsterdam, around 1970. Metz & Co. was one of the Netherlands' most important design retailers and manufacturers, with a long history of collaborating with significant Dutch designers including Gerrit Rietveld, whose furniture they produced from 1930 through the 1950s. This table sits squarely in that tradition: its geometry, its all-white palette, and its reduction to pure structure reflect the De Stijl design language that Metz & Co. championed throughout the 20th century.
The mechanism is the defining feature. Two square white laminate tabletops slide independently within a white enameled steel frame, making the table adjustable from 90 to 180 cm in width. Closed, it seats four comfortably; fully extended, six. The configuration is also flexible in between, which makes this genuinely practical in a way most extendable tables are not.
The finish is consistent throughout: white laminate tops, white enameled steel frame. There are surface scratches on the laminate, visible because the material beneath is darker. The wood components are in good condition. No rust, no discoloration, fully functional. Wear is visible in the pictures and consistent with a piece that has been used and is around 55 years old.
H 73 cm / D 81 cm / W 90 cm closed, extending to 180 cm.
