Danish Tallboy Chest of Drawers, Denmark, 1960s
With its generous proportions and clean architectural lines, this Danish tallboy is one of the largest chests of drawers to pass through our collection. Elevated on slender tapered legs, the cabinet combines an impressive storage capacity with the visual lightness that characterises the best Scandinavian cabinetmaking of the period. The warm teak veneer is carefully laid across the drawer fronts, while the sculpted solid teak handles introduce a subtle rhythm to the otherwise restrained façade.
The chest comprises six spacious drawers, each constructed with traditional dovetail joinery and offering substantial storage for clothing, linens or documents. The upper drawer is fitted with a working lock and key, providing secure storage while remaining seamlessly integrated into the overall design. Throughout the cabinet, the craftsmanship is evident in the crisp drawer fit, solid wood detailing and the refined execution of the sculpted pulls, which are shaped as an integral part of each drawer front rather than applied hardware.
Its balanced proportions and understated detailing allow the quality of the materials and construction to take centre stage. The softly figured teak has developed a rich, warm tone over the decades, complemented by the cabinet’s clean silhouette and carefully considered scale. A piece that combines everyday practicality with the quiet elegance of Danish modern design.
The chest has been carefully cleaned, fully inspected and treated with a high-quality furniture oil, allowing the teak to regain its depth while preserving its natural character and patina.
