Product description
Curated Danish Studio Ceramic Ensemble by Jette Andersen & Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen, Bornholm, ca. 1960s–1970s A beautifully balanced duo of Danish studio ceramics bringing together two distinct yet deeply compatible expressions of Scandinavian postwar design: a sculptural stoneware vase by Jette Andersen and a compact lidded ceramic box designed by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, Bornholm. Together, the pieces create a quiet dialogue between organic form and restrained geometry, between the tactile intimacy of studio pottery and the disciplined refinement of Danish modernism. Their earthy palette of warm ivory, deep brown, volcanic black, and iron-speckled glaze textures embodies the sensibility that made Bornholm ceramics internationally admired during the mid-20th century. The vase by Jette Andersen possesses a striking architectural silhouette: a cylindrical body rising into a dramatically widened shoulder and narrow neck, crowned by concentric glaze rings in smoky brown, charcoal, and cream. The flowing glaze recalls lava stone, Nordic coastlines, and wood-fired kiln effects. Though modest in scale, the form has a remarkable sculptural authority — almost like a miniature ceremonial vessel or abstracted oil lamp. The accompanying lidded box by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen introduces a softer geometric rhythm. Starck, one of the most important designers associated with Bornholm ceramics, became known for her highly sophisticated glaze work and understated sculptural forms. The small cylindrical container features layered bands of cream, chestnut, and umber glazes, interrupted by subtle speckling and painterly oxidized effects characteristic of Scandinavian studio ceramics of the period. The lid bears a rich abstract medallion-like glaze motif that almost resembles a textile or rune-like emblem. Founded in the late 19th century, Michael Andersen & Son became one of Denmark’s most respected ceramic manufacturers, especially through its collaborations with artists such as Marianne Starck, who modernized the company’s aesthetic vocabulary in the postwar decades. Their production stood at the intersection of craft tradition and modern design — a balance that remains highly collectible today. This pairing functions beautifully as a curated tabletop composition: the verticality of the vase counterbalanced by the grounded circularity of the lidded vessel. Together they evoke the atmosphere of Scandinavian interiors of the 1960s and 1970s — thoughtful, tactile, restrained, and deeply connected to materiality.
