The 60s and 70s were not only a golden age for music and art, but also for technology. The space race and the moon landing fueled boundless optimism about the future. This translated directly into design: spherical and funnel shapes and gleaming chrome, inspired by rockets and satellites.
This lamp, developed by the Dutch lighting manufacturer Herda – the market leader in the Netherlands at the time – is a beautiful example of this. A UFO? A rocket engine? That is for the viewer to decide. In any case, it is futuristic, even though the lamp is now at least sixty years old.
Over all those years, the lamp has acquired a few minor signs of use, but as a whole, it is still in very good condition. Along the edge, as can be seen in the photos, there are a few small chips. The attachment of the pull cord is slightly crooked. However, this does not affect how the lamp hangs.
In short, a beautifully preserved design from the Space Age era.
