The piece of furniture shown here is the PK66 coffee table, designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1972 for the renowned Danish manufacturer E. Kold Christensen. This model was only produced for a very short period – from approximately 1972 to 1974 – and is now one of the rarest collector's items from Kjærholm's oeuvre.
The table impresses with its clear geometry and the characteristically minimalist design for which Kjærholm is known. The tabletop is a precisely crafted square of plywood, covered with a fine maple veneer featuring a subtle diagonal pattern. The edges are neatly chamfered, emphasizing the graphic clarity of the surface.
Characteristic of the table are the four inset legs, made of multi-layered, molded plywood. They are positioned centrally on each side of the tabletop and have a gently rounded shape. This solution not only gives the table exceptional stability but also makes the square appear almost to float – a design principle that Kjærholm often pursued in his furniture: maximum impact with minimal material presence.
The table reflects Kjærholm's pursuit of material integrity and constructive elegance – even though, unlike many of his steel pieces, this model is made entirely of wood. This very exception makes the PK66 particularly compelling, as it reveals his deep connection to craftsmanship and the material of wood. The construction is visibly screwed together, yet executed with great precision.
Condition: The table is in very good condition with only minimal, superficial signs of wear on the tabletop, such as light scratches that occur with normal use. The veneer exhibits an even patina without any significant discoloration or damage. The legs are sturdy and firmly attached, and the edges are intact throughout. A superbly preserved table of high collector's value.
