Product description
Coffee Table, Padauk Wood with Carved Dragons, Anglo-Indian, 19th Century - India Type: Coffee table, small dining table, or side table Materials: Padauk wood (redwood) Style: Anglo-Indian Period: Second half of the 19th century Provenance: Private collection, France Good condition for its age and use Dimensions: 80 x 100 x 100 cm Impressive Anglo-Indian coffee table made of carved Padauk wood, dating from the second half of the 19th century. It was made in colonial India from the outset with the intention of being exported to Europe, primarily England. The circular top is entirely carved with fine vegetal and floral motifs, finished with a bias-cut cord. It rests on three legs, joined to a single, elaborately carved central stem. The legs feature imposing, large-scale dragon carvings. The detail of the scales is striking, a repetitive and highly realistic pattern that simulates the texture of the reptile's skin. Padauk wood, or redwood, is native to central and tropical West Africa, from Nigeria east to Congo-Kinshasa and south to Angola. It is obtained from a wide variety of Pterocarpus species. Commonly called narra or mukwa, padauk wood is a valuable resource due to its robustness, strength, and stability once worked. Its reddish color is quite distinctive, although it can be confused with rosewood. It is also known as vermilion due to its carmine hue. Its heartwood is a pale orange or deep reddish-brown, and the wood darkens once cut and exposed to light. With a generally straight grain, the texture of African padauk is open and rough, with a fine natural luster. It is immune to termites and other insects and is very easy to work, which is why it allows for this type of carving, including elaborate openwork. A highly decorative design with a strong visual impact and aesthetic appeal. This table can be the centerpiece of a living room, entryway, or bedroom; a dining table for 2-4 people; or even a library table for working. A high-end decorative piece that adds a distinctive touch to any room! Shipping costs will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight, and destination.
