Beautiful vintage coffee table, designed by Louis van Teeffelen and produced by the Wébé Furniture Factory in the 1960s. This model is listed in the original catalogue as model no. 16 and is the smaller version of model no. 15. The table originates from Haarlem and was inherited from the original family; it was originally part of a wedding trousseau!
The table has been carefully restored in our workshop. The solid teak frame and top have regained their deep, warm wood colour, allowing the beautiful wood grain to come fully into its own again. Subsequently, the wood was finished with a new, protective satin-matte finish. The practical rattan magazine rack has also been completely re-woven, making it sturdy once more and ready for years of use immediately. Here and there, light traces of its rich history are still visible, precisely what gives the table character and authenticity.
What makes this coffee table truly special is the striking mosaic tile panel. This is crafted from Graniver, a special type of glass developed by the Leerdam Glass Factory. The colorful pattern forms a beautiful artistic contrast with the warm teak wood. The result is a beautiful interplay of design and natural materials.
Since Louis van Teeffelen was strongly inspired by Scandinavian aesthetics, it is very likely that he looked to a similar design by the Danish designer Arne Hovmand-Olsen for the design of this tableau.
However, the design is unmistakably Louis van Teeffelen's. Place this table among ten other coffee tables, and it stands out effortlessly. The organically shaped lines, refined proportions, and elegant details immediately reveal his hand. The Scandinavian influences are clearly visible, but the result is, above all, an iconic piece of Dutch Design. A table with a distinct character of its own, which, more than sixty years after its design, still looks just as fresh, stylish, and relevant.
