This classic painting depicts a moving scene of Christ and John the Baptist. The work, likely a copy of an unidentified original, evokes the atmosphere of the masters from the time of Rubens or Van Dyck and shows the moment when the child John greets his cousin Christ following his return from exile in Egypt.
The artwork is executed on canvas and measures 114 centimeters high and 93 centimeters wide. The rich, dark colors and the detailed rendering of the figures and natural elements, such as the flowers in the foreground, bear witness to a meticulous technique. The painting is framed in an elegant, gold-colored frame with Baroque ornaments, which was added ten years ago when the work was cleaned and given a new layer of varnish.
The painting is in good condition, befitting its age. It has a remarkable provenance; it has been in the same family since 1880 and was once used as a means of payment at a rope-making workshop in Amsterdam. The recent restoration has preserved the colors and details well. This historic piece comes into its own beautifully in a classic or eclectic interior.
