The cabinet is finished in traditional black lacquer with beautiful inlaid decorations of birds, flowers, and tendril motifs. The decorations are crafted using the traditional Chinese mother-of-pearl inlay technique (Luódiàn), creating a beautiful interplay of color and light.
The interior consists of:
- a hinged upper compartment;
- four removable drawers;
- a lockable lower section with double doors.
Originally, this type of cabinet was used for storing documents, correspondence, writing implements, jewelry, cutlery, and other valuables.
The cabinet features:
- traditional Chinese lacquer with a red undercoat beneath the black lacquer;
- original metal corner protectors, hinges, and hardware;
- authentic assembly markings ("18") on drawers and the body;
- meticulous finishing on the front, sides, and back.
The cabinet has been professionally appraised by Asian Arts Consultancy Rotterdam (Dr. P.J.J. de Bruijn), a specialist in Asian art and antiques. According to the appraisal report, this is an authentic Chinese document cabinet/valuables cabinet from approximately 1930–1950. The detailed report is, of course, available for inspection by interested parties.
