Fine porcelain decorative plate, part of the series dedicated to the heroines of the classic Chinese novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" (红楼梦, Hong Lou Meng). The character depicted is Wang Xifeng (王熙凤), one of the most powerful and complex figures in the novel, a formidable manager of the Jia estate. The scene is graphically very rich. Xifeng stands on a polished white marble terrace, dressed in a long gown of sumptuous colors. The gown consists of a bright red bodice with an embroidered collar, a midnight blue skirt adorned with golden motifs, and vaporous white sleeves that flare elegantly. A golden belt with pendants accentuates the waist. Her hairstyle is elaborate, adorned with flowers. Her gaze is confident, her posture authoritative. In the background, a partially open red-brown lacquered door reveals a decorative panel painted with pink peonies and a porous garden rock. To the left, a gnarled pine tree with twisted branches. To the right, a carved wooden balustrade and a window with a geometric lattice overlook a pale blue sky and white rocks. A palace lantern is suspended in the upper left. Red seal in the bottom right. The border is adorned with a frieze of repetitive blue motifs on a white background, framed by two blue lines. The base of the plate is ivory white. On the reverse, an inscription in Chinese characters identifies the character (熙凤) and the work (Hong Lou Meng), the "永" (Yong) trademark crowned with laurels, and the mention "MADE IN CHINA / 中国制造". Diameter approximately 21 cm. Wang Xifeng is one of the most memorable female figures in Chinese literature. Intelligent, authoritative, and ambitious, she manages the affairs of the Jia clan with an iron fist. Her portrait is one of the most sought-after in the series by collectors, due to the strength of the character and the graphic quality of the composition. To hang on the wall, to display on a stand, in an Asian arts-themed interior, a library, or a cabinet of curiosities.
