Cheerful Sosaku Kokeshi.
This kokeshi has a round, bulbous head with black painting on the top.
Subtle, decorative patterns in the form of stylized floral or leaf motifs in light and dark shades of wood are visible on the head.
It is a minimalist, handmade object with a smooth, glossy wooden finish characteristic of Japanese kokeshi dolls.
A Kokeshi is a traditional Japanese wooden doll. They have been handmade for over 150 years in the northern Tōhoku region of Japan, known for its hot springs (onsen). Originally, they were made by woodturners as toys or souvenirs for spa guests.
They usually have a cylindrical body and a round head, without arms or legs.
They often feature fine, hand-painted details depicting a face and kimono-like patterns (often with floral motifs).
They are traditionally made from natural woods such as fruit tree wood (like cherry or maple).
Nowadays, kokeshi dolls are valued as art and collector's items. In addition to the traditional styles, there are also modern variants (creative kokeshi or sosaku kokeshi) that are freer in shape and color.
This is a Bobblehead kokeshi, so the head can wobble and rotate 360 degrees.
The height is 6 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
