A rare piece of history — rebuilt, but with its soul intact.
• Antique frame circa 1870 from a small castle in South Limburg
• Historic interior kept fully visible
• Modern blue webbing + rich Kobe fabric for a regal look
When I disassembled this piece of furniture, I discovered a beautiful historic interior. This chaise longue served for generations in a small castle in South Limburg, and it was very likely made in the area. The frame consists of roughly sawn planks — not by machine, but in the way a mill used to do. The joints are simply nailed, and the hinge is purely functional: hand-forged by a local blacksmith.
This is a piece of furniture as it was created in the past: through collaboration between various craftsmen, each with their own specialty. I wanted to keep that layered history visible in my design.
At the same time, I wanted to convey the feeling that we are holding an object with a rich past. That's why I deliberately chose deep blue webbing and an almost regal Kobe upholstery fabric. The craftsmanship remains honestly visible, while the materials enhance the furniture's dignity.
The bench is sturdy enough to be used—but it's still a frame from the late 19th century. So a touch of caution is appropriate.
