Product description
Ceramic Vase – VEB Haldensleben, East Germany, 1960s–1970s Description: Sculptural ceramic vase produced by VEB Keramik Haldensleben in the former GDR, featuring a textured turquoise-green glaze with applied relief decoration and horizontal banding. The expressive surface and volcanic glaze effects reflect the distinctive experimental aesthetic of East German studio-influenced ceramics of the 1960s–1970s. Dimensions: H 20 cm, W 14 cm, D 14 cm Material: Ceramic / stoneware Brand: VEB Haldensleben Designer: Manufacturer design, exact designer unknown Color: Green, turquoise and cream glaze Condition: Excellent vintage condition Era: 1960s–1970s Origin: East Germany (GDR) Remarks: Excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of age; no chips or cracks visible. Model number 2920/9 marked on the base. Manufacturer VEB Keramik Haldensleben was one of the most important ceramic producers in the German Democratic Republic. Founded earlier as Carstens-Uffrecht and nationalized after World War II, the factory continued producing decorative ceramics throughout the 1950s–1970s and became known for highly experimental glazes and sculptural forms. Many pieces from Haldensleben feature layered volcanic glazes, relief textures, and bold architectural shapes that distinguish East German ceramics from the smoother industrial aesthetics of West German pottery. Design Observations This vase combines a compact cylindrical body with a wide collar and ribbed base elements that create strong architectural rhythm. The central band with raised dotted relief resembles stylized botanical or cellular structures, accentuated by the reactive glaze that transitions between turquoise, moss green, and cream tones. The interplay of relief texture and glaze pooling is typical of late mid-century East German ceramic design, where industrial production often intersected with studio pottery aesthetics. What for A strong decorative piece for collectors of East German ceramics or mid-century European pottery. The vase works well as a standalone sculptural object on a console, shelf, or sideboard, and pairs beautifully with dried grasses, branches, or minimalist floral arrangements in modern, brutalist, or vintage interiors.
