History and Production
Salvador Dalí (Figueres, Girona, 1904-1989) explored ceramic design as another facet of his prolific artistic production. His interest in object design began during his time in the United States from 1934, where he worked on jewelry, footwear, and other decorative items for renowned brands. This exploration led him to collaborate with the ceramic industry.
In 1954, the factory El Siglo de Onda (Castellón), owned by Miguel Piñón Guinot, produced a series of six tiles featuring drawings by Dalí. Some of these tiles have an inscription on the reverse: "1954 Maurice Duchin / all rights reserved," indicating the year and the name of the collector who managed the production.
Technically, these tiles were made using semi-dry press molding, fired, and painted using the stenciling technique, with a separate stencil for each color. According to Lemmen (1989), the designs are grouped thematically in pairs:
Life (The Vegetable Sun: a sun with branches surrounded by doves) and Death (The Starfish: a star with wavy arms in the diagonals).
War (Arrows: four arrows converging at the center) and Peace (Doves: a group of birds in flight).
Love (The Kiss of Fire: a flower with red lips in the center and eyes on the petals) and Music (The Guitars: a cubist composition featuring instruments).
According to expert Riu de Martín, an initial limited series of 8 x 8 cm tiles was hand-painted and targeted at art collectors, with some sold in the United States. In the 1954 reissue, the tile size was increased to 20 x 20 cm. Later editions, such as the 1964 series, differ in their reverse design and reduced thickness.
This series represents an extraordinary example of Dalí’s ability to merge fine art with industrial craftsmanship, making it a sought-after collectible for both art and design enthusiasts.
