Product description
Castilian millstone, granite and iron foot, f. s. XVIII - Castilla y León, Spain Magnificent traditional Castilian millstone, wheel or grinding wheel, circular in shape. The piece is made of granite and several radial grooves can be seen, which were used to grind wheat, corn or barley grains into flour. They also serve to distribute the grain and expel the flour. The three perforations of the stone stand out, two of them were used for an axis of rotation and feeding of the grain, while the central perforation was used for a secondary axis or to fix the piece. Its very marked grooves, its light color and the double hole seem to evidence its Castilian origin, as it has the typical characteristics of the wheels of Castilian hydraulic grain mills. It is exhibited on a contemporary iron foot. About the millstones The millstones, characterized by their irregular surface, are placed on the sill (lower horizontal member of a wall or building to which both horizontal and vertical inclined members are attached), which remains stationary as the wheel rotates on it. They were arranged in pairs attached to the runners that were in contact with the force of the water. The lower stone is called "solera" and the upper stone was the "volandera". They form an indispensable piece to grind wheat and other cereals to obtain flour. The grain came from the upper deposits or hoppers. Normally, animal traction or the flow of water from a river was used for this mechanism. In each region different products were milled, that is why the size of the stones is different in each place.
