A rare and beautiful ensemble, this set of two double candlesticks and a table clock.
The elegant ensemble was purchased by my parents in the 70s/early 80s and was bought as a set, and is therefore also being sold as a set.
The candlesticks and table clock are made of lucite/acrylic, a hard plastic, with brass/gilded details.
Due to the use of a single piece of bent and twisted acrylic to form the whimsical base, this candlestick is often called the pretzel (Prretzel).
The design of the candlesticks is by Elaine Bscheider for Dorothy C. Thorpe.
Dorothy Thorpe, based in California, began designing glass pieces in the 1940s.
Her work was initially sold in a small Hollywood gift shop and was soon picked up by larger, well-known stores.
Her client base grew and included famous names such as Clarke Gable, Princess Grace of Monaco, and the Shah of Iran. In the mid-20th century, she began experimenting with Lucite regarding the design of these Pretzel candlesticks, which are generally attributed to Elaine Bscheider for Dorothy Thorpe Inc.
The candlesticks were never marked but were sold with the Dorothy Thorpe label.
The clock runs on a AA battery and functions properly; the clock has some crazing in the Lucite but is undamaged, and features glass on the outer sides.
The two double candlesticks are in excellent condition with minimal signs of use.
