A delightful two-light chandelier, dating from around the 1870s and later electrically installed, in the Napoleon III style. Exquisitely crafted by the renowned sculptor and bronze worker Victor Paillard, the chandelier features two arms adorned with garlands of flowers and leaves, made, like the base, of ormolu. On the base is a small, hand-painted blue porcelain piece in the Sèvres style depicting Cupid shooting arrows. This childlike figure is repeated in the central sculpture held by the two garland-like arms: a cherub gathering flowers with his cloak. The light-emitting arms have glass bases upon which an electrical installation for light bulbs has been mounted, with the sockets concealed by opaque blue glass beads. The piece rests on four small gilt bronze legs. An exquisite and unique piece of great aesthetic refinement and timeless beauty.
About Victor Paillard (1805–1886)
Victor Paillard was a renowned French bronze caster and sculptor active in Paris, a key figure in the production of artistic bronze during the Second Empire. He directed one of the most prestigious workshops of the time, collaborating with sculptors such as Pradier and Carrier-Belleuse, and specializing in decorative sculpture, luxury objects, and high-quality bronze reproductions.
He participated in several Universal Expositions, where he won awards that solidified his international reputation. Its pieces are prized for their technical precision, rich finishes, and the refined Rococo and historicist style that characterizes its production.
National Manufactory of Sèvres
Originally founded in Vincennes in 1740, the National Manufactory of Sèvres moved to Sèvres in 1756. One of Europe's leading porcelain factories, it successively bore the names of different political regimes: Royal, Imperial, and National Manufactory. Still operating, the firm continues to produce objects created since 1740, although its current production is largely focused on contemporary designs.
It was founded with the support of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, with the aim of creating pieces for the court and competing with the porcelain productions of Meissen and Chantilly. In fact, the first experiments were carried out by the brothers Robert and Gilles Dubois, from the Chantilly manufactory. In its early years, the factory primarily produced soft-paste porcelain; Hard porcelain, made with kaolin, was not marketed in Sèvres until 1770. It was the first French factory to use fine gold.
During the French Revolution, the factory suffered a decline in production, but experienced a resurgence between 1800 and 1847 under the direction of Alexandre Brongniart, who brought the factory international renown. During these years, many important technical innovations were made, and several contemporary artists collaborated with the factory. A new gilding technique was introduced during this period, which involved burnishing the surface with an agate stone to achieve a brilliant finish. Pieces were also decorated with a matte gilt, which was made by rubbing the gold with very fine sand. It was at this time that the cartouche became the central motif for ornamental vases, designed in the style of an oil painting, with a gilded cartouche on a monochrome background. From the mid-19th century onward, the dominant styles were eclecticism and historicism, and some models revived past typologies, such as the Mannerism of Fontainebleau and the Baroque of Versailles.
