The Story & Vision Behind the Work
The Artist: Born in Czechoslovakia in 1935, Klara Sever brought a unique perspective to America after completing her academic sculpture training in Prague and Bratislava. Influenced by European masters of modernism (such as Henry Moore), she possessed a rare ability to translate universal human emotions into flowing, abstract-organic forms.
The "New Seed" motif: In the early 1970s—a time of social upheaval—Sever created this motif as a metaphor for security, protection, and new beginnings. The two towering main figures, with their silhouettes, form a protective crown, in the center of which the small element—the "new seed"—rests safely. The characteristic, slightly rough surface texture and the bronze patina lend the object its grounding, sublime presence.
The production: The original modeled in clay by Sever was cast by Austin Productions in their New York studio using the Durastone casting process and then hand-patinated in multiple layers of bronze, gold, and dark tones. This resulted in a unique depth and tactile quality that perfectly imitates genuine bronze casting.
