Master of Your Own Destiny is a bronze sculpture by Guatemalan artist Walter Peter Brenner. It depicts a powerfully muscled man holding a hammer and chisel, with which he appears to be shaping his own body from a block of stone. His torso and arms, caught in a lateral twisting motion, are already emerging from the rock. This figure of the sculptor sculpting himself naturally evokes the figure of the "self-made man": the man who started from nothing and rose through his own merit. This idea permeates the artist's work, which he himself defines as the expression of "romantic heroism": he champions a "heroic sense of life, a feeling that man is capable of shaping and molding his destiny." Master of Your Own Destiny II is directly inspired by the main character in Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged, a true plea for individual achievement. Reading it made a lasting impression on the artist, for whom this sculpture illustrates "the independence of thought and the power of will through which each man is able to forge his own destiny."
