At the heart of that quintessential Danish hygge feeling stands a piece of furniture that has been synonymous with ultimate comfort and timeless aesthetics for generations: the J52G rocking chair by Børge Mogensen, designed for FDB Møbler.
History.
When the young, ambitious Børge Mogensen was appointed chief designer of the furniture department at the Danish Co-op (FDB) in the 1940s, he had a crystal-clear mission. Furniture should no longer be for the elite alone; the common man deserved quality and design too. This led to a wave of democratic design, where functionality and aesthetics went hand in hand. It was during this creative heyday that Mogensen conceived the J52 series, a furniture line that would change Danish living rooms forever. The J52G was not born a rocking chair overnight. Mogensen initially designed a fixed spindle chair, heavily inspired by classic English Windsor chairs. But the designer's blood runs deep, and by simply mounting a few wooden runners under the frame, he created an icon. The chair transformed from a practical dining chair into the ultimate invitation to unwind.
The "G" stands for Gyngestol, Danish for rocking chair.
What makes the J52G so special is its visual lightness. While traditional rocking chairs often look bulky and heavy, Mogensen has succeeded in designing a chair that appears almost transparent. The slender, upward-tapering wooden spindles form an elegant backrest that offers perfect support, while the wide, fluidly shaped armrests naturally cradle the arms. Even the seat is so ergonomically shaped that you can sit comfortably for hours. It is a masterpiece of minimalism, made from honest, local wood that only gets more beautiful with age. The chair became so popular in the 1950s and 1960s that it secured a permanent place in Danish pop culture. Famous illustrations from that era (by Danish illustrator Aage Sikker Hansen) invariably depicted a woman enjoying a moment of rest in this exact chair. The image became the ultimate symbol of Danish domesticity, also known as "Hygge."
After having disappeared from the streets for a while, the J52G rocking chair is making a complete comeback today.
Original examples are currently cherished and sought after by vintage enthusiasts worldwide.
Due to this renewed popularity, FDB Møbler has resumed production, allowing the design to capture the hearts of design lovers once again.
