For sale is a beautiful, small dish/business card holder/dish/ashtray/ashtray. It was designed and made by Georg von Mendelssohn of Dresden-Hellerau around 1920. The underside is marked 'Mendelssohn' and bears the model number 498. It has a square brass base with raised sides and a fully sculpted animal motif. Dimensions: Height approx. 2 cm, Length approx. 9 cm, Depth approx. 9 cm.
Georg Mendelssohn was a German craftsman, metal artist, and goldsmith. He was born in Dorpat in 1886 and died in Baden-Baden in 1955. He was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsmen). He created many designs for the Deutsche Werkstätten (German Workshops). Important contemporaries of his included Richard Riemerschmid, Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Werfel, and Oskar Kokoschka.
