Art Deco Ceramic Centerpiece by Boch Frères Keramis, La Louvière
Designed by Raymond Chevalier, Belgium, 1930s
A striking and richly decorative Art Deco centerpiece by Boch Frères Keramis, designed by Raymond Chevalier, combining sculptural elegance with the exuberant floral artistry of the period. Raised on a stepped pedestal foot and fitted with elegant looped handles heightened in gold, the piece has a refined architectural presence while remaining warm and highly decorative.
Its broad, shallow bowl is covered in a vibrant all-over floral décor of stylized roses and blue blossoms, animated by fine brown linework and a delicate age-related craquelure in the glaze — a characteristic and much-appreciated feature in antique faience, adding depth and authenticity to the surface. The composition feels both bold and delicate, a wonderful example of how Art Deco could merge geometry with romantic natural motifs.
With its generous scale, this piece works beautifully as a center table bowl, fruit compote, or purely as a sculptural decorative object. It makes a strong statement in Art Deco interiors, yet pairs equally well with eclectic or modern settings.
Presented in very good antique condition, with gentle wear to the gilding on the handles and age-related craquelure to the glaze, both entirely typical for faience pieces approaching a century in age, along with minor imperfections consistent with careful use.
Founded in 1841 in La Louvière, Boch Frères Keramis became one of Belgium’s most important ceramic manufactories, celebrated for both artistic innovation and technical excellence. During the Art Deco period, under designers such as Raymond Chevalier, the factory produced some of its most distinctive creations, blending modernist forms with richly imaginative decoration — pieces today prized by collectors of European decorative arts.
