"Black Kimono Okappa" Kokeshi by (presumably) Kunio Miyagawa. The term "Okappa" refers to the traditional, straight bob haircut with bangs. These wooden dolls are unique, hand-carved and painted works of art from Japan that symbolize happiness, friendship, and elegance. This specific design is characterized by the minimalist, calm facial expression, the glossy black hair, and the subtly carved flowers (often chrysanthemums or plum blossoms) on the dark robe.Kunio Miyagawa was born in 1933 in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Miyagawa began making Kokeshi dolls around the age of 23 (circa 1956). He later opened the Miyakawa Kokeshi Dolls Factory, where he perfected his craft and later also trained his son, Yuichi Miyagawa, as a Kokeshi artist. He is known as a master of the Sosaku style. Unlike traditional Kokeshi (which follow strict regional patterns), the Sosaku style gives the artist complete creative freedom in form, color, and woodworking. Miyagawa's work is often characterized by beautifully glossy lacquer finishes (such as the deep black hairstyle and kimono in your photo), minimalist, serene facial expressions, and elegant woodcarving. Kunio Miyagawa is a highly decorated craftsman. He has won several national awards, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award twice (in 1980 and 1990), the highest artistic distinction for Kokeshi makers in Japan.The height is 17 cm; please view the photos for the condition.Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
