Biophilic Coffee Table by ROGER CAPRON
Roger Capron (1922–2006) was a pivotal figure in the post-war ceramic renaissance of Vallauris, France, a region famously revitalized by Pablo Picasso. By the late 1960s, Capron shifted away from hand-painted geometric forms to embrace "organic modernism," resulting in his iconic "Garrigue" and "Herbier" series.
The defining innovation of this collection was its manufacturing process. Capron’s team foraged for native Provençal vegetation—wild thyme, rosemary, and grasses from the garrigue (scrubland)—and pressed these specimens directly into wet stoneware (grès) tiles. During the kiln firing at high temperatures, the organic matter incinerated completely, leaving behind detailed, "fossilized" negative impressions. This technique resulted in unique, textural surfaces that brought the outdoors in, effectively pioneering an early form of biophilic design. Your table is not merely furniture; it is a permanent botanical archive of the French Riviera in the 1970s.
