Bernard Rooke Studio Pottery Vase – Brutalist Textured Ceramic – England, 1960s–1970s
Highly expressive studio pottery vase attributed to British ceramic artist Bernard Rooke, featuring a compact spherical form richly covered with sculptural relief decoration. The surface is composed of deeply carved vertical segments filled with geometric and dotted motifs, creating a rhythmic architectural structure across the entire body.
The vase displays Rooke’s characteristic earthy volcanic glaze palette, combining warm terracotta tones with dark brown and black surfaces and subtle greenish highlights around the neck. The heavy texturing and hand-built quality give the object a powerful tactile presence typical of British studio pottery of the 1960s–1970s.
Rather than relying on smooth ceramic surfaces, Rooke emphasizes relief, structure, and materiality. The result is an object that feels almost archaeological—somewhere between ancient artifact and modern sculpture.
Designer
Bernard Rooke (born 1938) is one of the most recognizable figures of post-war British studio pottery. After studying at Goldsmiths College in London, he established his workshop in the early 1960s and quickly developed a distinctive visual language characterized by deeply carved textures and earthy glazes.
Rooke’s work diverges from the refined Anglo-Japanese aesthetic associated with Bernard Leach and instead embraces a more brutalist and sculptural approach, influenced by architecture, tribal art, and primitive forms. His ceramics became widely collected during the 1960s and 1970s and remain highly recognizable for their bold surfaces and expressive craftsmanship.
Today his works are considered key examples of mid-century British studio ceramics, appreciated for their raw materiality and sculptural presence.
Design
The compact globular form serves as a canvas for the richly structured relief. Vertical ribs divide the surface into panels filled with small geometric impressions, giving the object a rhythmic, almost totemic character. The thick glazes settle into the recesses of the carving, producing a dynamic interplay of dark volcanic tones and warm terracotta highlights.
The slightly irregular opening and the textured foot further emphasize the hand-built nature of the piece.
