A standalone home bar from the Belgian modernist period, attributed to De Coene and built in the steel-framed style associated with Jules Wabbes. It is the kind of piece that anchors a room: warm teak meeting black tubular steel, with an open, architectural stance rather than a closed cabinet.
The top is white laminate with a teak-edged border, sitting above vertically reeded, dark-lacquered panels. It stands on a black steel base with a built-in footrest — the right height to pull up a stool and pour a drink.
There is a nice detail to know about. The front originally carries a hand-painted reverse-glass panel, typical of better Belgian bars from this era. A previous owner fitted a dark olive-green panel over it to hide the window. That panel is not structural and can simply be removed to reveal the original painted glass underneath.
A genuine piece of mid-century Belgian design for anyone who likes furniture with a story and a bit of character.
