Medieval Brussels "Hunts of Maximilian" Belgian Jacquard Tapestry.
This is a tapestry depicting a medieval hunting scene from the "Hunts of Emperor Maximilian" series. The scene shows a landscape with figures on horseback against a detailed view of the city of Brussels in the background. The design is inspired by 16th-century Flemish tapestries, now housed in the Louvre. Such decorative wall hangings are often produced as reproductions in wool or other materials.
This tapestry is an interpretation in the style of the Flemish tapestries from the "Hunts of Maximilian" series.
Large Tapestry Wall Hanging
Large 16th-century style woven wool tapestry wall hanging, 210 x 136 cm panel. Taken from the "Hunts of Maximilian" series of twelve Flemish tapestries, now found in the Louvre. Depicting the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian and other noblemen on horseback with a detailed view of the city of Brussels in the background. Within a border of flowers and fruit, plus a classical frieze along the bottom edge. Slightly padded to give three dimensions to the figures and details. With a sewn pocket along the top edge for hanging.
One of twelve Belgian tapestries in medieval Jacquard weave depicting the "Hunts of Maximilian." The colorful scene, representing the month of March with a ram at its center, is full of activity and shows several episodes featuring different figures, each capturing a moment in time.
The spring scene takes place in the Forest of Sonian, south of Brussels, with Emperor Charles V as the main figure, leading the stag hunt and being pursued by hounds. The background shows a detailed, recognizable panorama of Brussels with the Coudenberg Palace, the City Hall, and the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. Various noblemen, including falconers with birds of prey and dog handlers, are depicted amidst a lush landscape of foliage and forest greenery.
A spectacular, intricate scene that captivates the eye and inspires wonder, transforming a room with refined warmth. This work exhibits a sophisticated Renaissance compositional style, with a sweeping landscape behind the many active human figures and realistically arranged animals in the near and far.
The original was likely designed by Bernard van Orley around 1530 and is housed in the Louvre in Paris, along with the entire series. The tapestry is fully lined and includes a rod tunnel for hanging.
