Beautiful Shiawase kokeshi by Usaburo. The kokeshi doll in the photos is the famous "Shiawase" (しあわせ) model, meaning "Happiness," created by the renowned Usaburo Kokeshi studio from Gunma Prefecture in Japan. This model is known for its characteristic, egg-shaped body (たまご型 - tamago-gata) with a round, smooth finish in which the head and body flow seamlessly into one another. The doll displays a serene, minimalist face subtly hidden behind a traditional kimono, which is decorated with delicate, carved white flowers (plum blossom or ume).Usaburo Okamoto is known as a pioneer within the Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi movement in Gunma Prefecture, Usaburo (1917 - 2009) from the 1970s. The wood grain of this kimono is beautifully decorated. Usaburo began his artistic career creating industrial metal artworks and subsequently turned to the Kokeshi tradition in 1950. He is considered one of the most important masters of this tradition, particularly famous for introducing new styles and decoration techniques that contributed to the birth of the so-called "creative" kokeshi, detached from a figurative point of view compared to the "traditional" ones. During his career, he received numerous awards, including the prestigious Premier's Award.The height is 12 cm; please view the photos for the condition.Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
