About the artist:
After studying to become a concert pianist and Dutch language and literature, Barend Roest Crollius worked as a literary journalist for the Algemeen Dagblad and Elseviers Weekblad. In 1935, he made his debut with the anti-Nazi *Kroniek van een jeugdzonde* (Chronicle of a Youthful Sin). A year later, his anti-Hitler novel *Onheil in de verte* (Red Hell in the Distance) and the novel *Land van verlangen* (Land of Longing) were published. After the Second World War, critic Jan Greshoff brought Roest Crollius to the public's attention. Various books followed, addressing different themes. In 1963, his epistolary novel *Bezwarend getuige* (Aggravating Testimony) was awarded the Marianne Philips Prize. In 1972, Roest Crollius decided to stop writing for good and to draw and paint only.
