Beautiful large Tsugaru Kokeshi 36 cm. The painting on the front illustrates Gojinjo Daiko (御陣乗太鼓) – one of Japan's most intense, ritual drum performances. The Legend of the Unarmed Villagers. This tells a historical story dating back to 1577, when the formidable warlord Uesugi Kenshin invaded the local province. The local fishermen and farmers of the village of Nafune were completely unarmed and had no weapons to defend their homeland. In a brilliant act of psychological warfare, the villagers carved terrifying, eerie masks from raw tree bark, placed seaweed on their heads to resemble wild, disheveled hair, and began beating war drums with immense ferocity in the dark. The pounding sound of the drums sounded as if the earth were tearing open, and the sight of the masked "demons" terrified the invading samurai army, causing them to retreat without a fight. The drummer with Bachi (drumstick) wears the distinctive ghostly demon mask used to drive away the intruders. The taiko drum itself explicitly conveys the theme with the text 御陣乗太鼓 (Gojinjo Daiko). On the natural wood grain on the right, a majestic phoenix
(Hō-ō) is drawn with minimalist red lines, adding an elegant, auspicious energy and balancing the warrior theme. In contrast to abstract folk art expressions, her facial features are painted with extraordinary, lifelike precision. The subtle shadows around her eyelids, her expressive eyebrows, and the perfectly styled locks of hair framing her face give her the regal, dignified appearance of a living portrait.
