Beautiful large Kokeshi by Tomio Ishida (18 cm).
This is a creative kokeshi doll (sosaku), designed and hand-painted by the renowned Japanese craftsman Tomio Ishida. Ishida is known for his "cheerful" designs from the 1960s and 70s, often characterized by large round heads, round eyes, and colorful floral motifs.
He was particularly active in the late Shōwa period (1970s–80s) and won multiple awards for his craftsmanship, including the prestigious Governor's Award at the All-Japan Kokeshi Competition.
Ishida Waichi is a prominent kokeshi doll artist, primarily active in the Tohoku region, an area known for its traditional kokeshi craftsmanship. His artistry is celebrated both domestically and internationally through various exhibitions, where his craftsmanship has received much praise and recognition.
The head of the kokeshi is spherical and made of a light wood, such as maple or dogwood. It has a bob haircut typical of this style.
The doll has a sweet, minimalist face with painted eyes (looking down from above, with eyelashes) and a small red mouth.
On top of her head, the doll wears a striking, bright red wooden bow.
The body is a solid, cylindrical trunk, narrower at the base and slightly wider at the 'shoulders'. It has a subtle, ribbed texture, similar to finely serrated wood, which gives the doll a distinctive feel.
The body is decorated with floral motifs. There are two red flowers and two white flowers with yellow centers, painted with black leaves and branches. This pattern runs around the cylindrical body.
