Beautiful Kokeshi by Masae Fujikawa (1942-2015). Fujikawa-san was born in 1942 in Gunma Prefecture and began making kokeshi dolls in 1959, at the age of 17. His work garnered admiration from kokeshi enthusiasts and won numerous awards, including the prestigious Premier's Prize twice, the highest honor bestowed upon kokeshi artists. Today, Fujikawa Kogei is a renowned sosaku kokeshi studio where two generations of the Fujikawa family create a wide range of kokeshi products – from very popular, affordable dolls to exclusive, high-quality artworks for competitions and serious collectors. Fujikawa is known for his refined use of pyrography techniques and paint to create floral patterns on the michiyuki (clothing) of the doll. The Sosaku ("creative" or "modern") kokeshi movement in Japan originated in Gunma in the 1950s and quickly developed into a major cultural phenomenon. Although deeply rooted in Japanese cultural tradition, it reflected the freedom, aspiration, and creativity unleashed at the end of World War II. It was also fueled by the younger generation's drive for modernity and societal transformation. Driven by the talent, passion, and daring of dozens of young artists, sosaku kokeshi soon established itself as a major popular art form, alongside dento ("traditional") kokeshi, which likewise experienced explosive growth in the interest of a broad audience in the 1960s.
