Beautiful Hinagiku Kokeshi by Ryoka Aoki. Ryōka Aoki (青木良香 / 青木蓼華) was born in 1931 in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Aoki is one of the most distinguished female artisans in modern Japanese crafts and has won more than 100 prestigious national awards throughout her life. Her most notable accolades include: Premier's Award (内閣総理大臣賞): won a rare total of four times (starting in 1980/1988). Minister of Education Award (文部大臣賞): awarded twice, specifically in 1975 for her masterpiece “Hana Tenshi” (Flower Angel). Ministerial Recognition: received the award from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry twelve times, the award from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries six times, and the award from the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare. Contemporary Master Craftsman & National Honors: in 2013, she was designated a "Modern Master Craftsman" (現代の名工). In 2016, she was officially awarded the Yellow Ribbon Medal (黄綬褒章) by the Emperor of Japan for her lifelong dedication and excellence in her craft. Hinagiku translates from Japanese as daisies. She beautifully displays Ryōka Aoki's signature theme: a sweet child's face emerging from a canvas of vibrant nature. The body is meticulously hand-painted with common and red daisies (often referred to as her Hinagiku/Maisbandjes series motifs) that wrap around a little girl with a classic straight bob. The doll perfectly captures the innocent, dreamy, and gentle expression that made Aoki's work so sought after by collectors worldwide, including the Japanese Imperial Family. The height is 14 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
