The Cubist Gelderland Classic
The Cube Sofa was Jan des Bouvrie's first design for Gelderland. What began with a few design sketches in 1969 has become a true design classic. Behind the famous Cube Sofa lies a remarkable story. That story begins in 1969, when the founder of Gelderland, Koene Oberman, visits the Des Bouvrie family's Goed Wonen furniture store in Bussum.
The young, ambitious Jan des Bouvrie shows him a few of his first design sketches and manages to convince Mr. Oberman. These are sketches of the Cube Sofa. This will be the first design by Des Bouvrie ever to go into production. His Cube Sofa became an icon in the design world and played a key role in the success of Gelderland.
Over the years, Jan des Bouvrie's designs have been rewarded with countless prizes and accolades. The Cube Sofa is also included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Centraal Museum Utrecht.
