This double figure sculpture represents a seated male–female pair from the Baule people of central Côte d’Ivoire. The figures are rendered with the characteristic elongated proportions, almond-shaped eyes, and geometric facial scarifications associated with Baule aesthetics.
The two figures share a circular stool, with the male figure’s arm gently placed across the shoulders of the female figure — a gesture symbolizing unity, protection, and conjugal harmony. Their composed posture and frontal orientation reflect the Baule ideal of serenity and inner balance.
The surface displays a deep, dark patina, accumulated through age and handling, enhancing the sculptural volume and the tactile quality of the wood. Decorative scarifications across the torso, abdomen, and face are executed with precision, highlighting the cultural significance of body marking within Baule visual tradition.
Double figures of this type often serve as representations of ancestral couples, spiritual intermediaries, or symbols of fertility and social continuity within Baule communities. While not associated with a documented ritual provenance, this example demonstrates craftsmanship consistent with traditional workshop production.
Condition:
The sculpture is in very good condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age and use. No visible restorations.
