Product description
Bar cabinet/sideboard, rosewood, Vittorio Dassi for La Permanente Mobili di Cantù, Mid-century, 1950s – Italy Designer: Vittorio Dassi Company: La Permanente Mobili di Cantù Style: Mid-century Materials: Rosewood, mirrors Period: 1950s Country of origin: Italy Good condition considering its age and use Overall dimensions: 130 x 190 x 45 cm A majestic bar cabinet designed by Vittorio Dassi for La Permanente Mobili di Cantù, a prestigious Italian designer active in the mid-20th century. Made of rosewood, its main modules feature an original herringbone design thanks to the wood grain. The upper half is divided into three sections, each with its own independent key; The central section opens like a bar cabinet and is entirely covered in mirrors, also featuring a glass shelf. The side sections are divided by another glass shelf. The handles are gilded bronze. The lower section is open, with a carved and gilded background forming small recesses and projections that create a striking interplay of light and shadow. Beneath the central door is a curved shelf. The base is made of smoked glass in a mahogany tone. The front is recessed, so the side modules protrude from the central panel. This central panel is precisely the most distinctive feature of the piece due to its ornamentation. It features a bas-relief in carved and gilded wood, depicting a beautiful Art Deco scene alluding to board games, with dice, cards, chess pieces, as well as doves and butterflies. This door opens horizontally. Vittorio Dassi (1893–1973) Vittorio Dassi was a postwar and contemporary Italian artist born in 1893. Dassi's furniture, created between the 1940s and 1950s, is distinguished by its choice of precious woods such as rosewood, cherry, ash, and walnut, often decorated with inlaid panels and glass pieces signed by renowned glassmakers. Elegant in design without sacrificing functionality, his furniture can be compared to the refined style of Gio Ponti, with whom Vittorio collaborated extensively after taking over from his father at the Dassi Mobili Moderni company in Lissone. Among the factory's most important projects was, in fact, the furniture for the rooms of the Hotel Royal in Naples, designed by Ponti in the mid-1950s, a period that marks Dassi's turning point towards more schematic forms and teak for the production of modular furniture. In general, Italian modernist designers remained deeply attached to and influenced by their artisanal traditions. But their contribution to defining modernism was decisive also and above all because it was defined by a considerable dose of artistic liberalism. The aesthetic diversity within the movement itself was great: pieces like this 1960s desk in steel and rosewood by Gianni Moscatelli for Formanova seem to blend Danish and Dutch elements; while the legendary Gio Ponti created designs in oak, mahogany, and antler that exude an exquisitely Italian sensibility; and again, Vittorio Dassi's mid-century desks, with their contrasting materials and forms, illustrate another new characteristic of Italian modernism. La Permanente Mobili di Cantù (1893-) For over a century, La Permanente Mobili di Cantù has given voice to visionary designers, transforming their innovative ideas into timeless design icons. The history of furniture design cannot overlook the legacy of such a significant institution as the Consorzio La Permanente Mobili, founded in 1893 by a group of highly skilled artisans from Cantù. Their aim was to join forces to showcase their work to the public—primarily in Milan at that time—in a single, grand exhibition space. Beyond its commercial role, the consortium has always been a central hub for its members, fostering collaboration, dialogue, and the exchange of knowledge. Over the years, this continuous exchange of expertise and experience has been fundamental in establishing Cantù furniture as a symbol of excellence worldwide.
