Product description
Impressive still life entitled “Fleurs d’automne” (“Autumn Flowers”) by French artist Marthe Danard Puig. In the center, a slender, cylindrical vase filled with chrysanthemums, most of them already wilted. The background is dark, enhancing the luminosity and chromatic richness of the flowers. It displays the characteristic style of its genre: realistic and meticulous, which gradually gained importance in art history. The great artist Caravaggio (1573–1610) was one of the first artists to depict still lifes with a sense of being a pictorial work, but many others used it at some point in their careers. With origins in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, the still life gives the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as landscape or portraiture. Before 1700, still lifes often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects they depicted. Also known as still lifes, they often feature animals, flowers, fruits, foods, plants, and more. Their development is part of a growing appreciation for painting and an explosion of interest in naturalism and the imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century. It stands as a sublime and beautiful work, exquisite and of great pictorial quality. It does not seek solely visual delight, but rather invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time, delving into the fleeting beauty of nature and vegetation through the "arrival of autumn" and the flowers and petals scattered across the tablecloth. Chrysanthemums are the representative flowers of Japanese autumn, again referencing the title of the work. Marthe Danard Puig is a painter renowned for her floral still lifes. Her works are noted for their harmonious and delicate compositions, often in large formats and with a classic realism.
