Cheerful and colorful screen print by Engels. 165/200. Dimensions 30x40cm and silkscreen 10x13cm. Over the years, Astrid Engels has painted an impressive body of work. Time and again, this well-known Dutch artist shows growth and change in her oeuvre. She is not guided by various movements in contemporary art, but continues to develop and expand her own distinctive style. She finds her inspiration in the irresistible attraction of the holy and sacred places in the world, where religion, astronomical knowledge, technology and culture continue to stimulate and inspire her imagination, each with their own gods and goddesses who form the basis of the many myths, legends and rituals. She regularly travels to the remains of ancient civilizations. From the giant menhirs in Stonehenge to the secret forests of China. In the numerous temples of Vietnam and Cambodia she discovered how worship of the gods can color the lives of believers. In the mysterious African continent she searched for the magical rock paintings and experienced the ancestor worship with medicine men in dark cult caves. The culture in Indonesia gave her - through the deeply religious experience - a spiritual working capital for her brush and the enchanting beauty of the past was anchored in mysterious ancient Egypt. She climbed the savage ruins of the Aztec and Maya in South America and the moonlit temples in Greece and Rome gave her a wealth of inspiration. All those impressions and experiences gained worldwide come to life in her paintings. Astrid studied Italian after her secondary education. As a visual artist she is self-taught. In 1965 Astrid Engels won, in 5 television broadcasts, as an archaeologist in his own field a science quiz about Ancient Egypt and in particular Pharaoh Tutankhamun. In 1992 she won the Movado Museum Prize. On May 17, 2009, Astrid Engels was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Astrid has regularly exhibited in various galleries National and International in the past. From 2000 she exhibits her latest work exclusively through her website and in her own studio in Huizen for viewing / sales and / or assignments.
