This early Artifort 784 Concorde from 1966 was fully restored in my studio.
The armchair received new webbing, newly constructed foam, and new upholstery in Kvadrat Tonica 2 wool. The steel base was repainted in RAL 9010. Combined with the light upholstery, the chair appears to almost float above the floor — an effect that further emphasizes Pierre Paulin's sculptural design.
What makes this early Concorde special is its original construction. The first series were traditionally constructed using webbing and hand-formed furniture foam. The final shape was literally created under the hands of the upholsterer. In later production years, Artifort switched to pre-foamed, molded elements. This significantly accelerated production, but connoisseurs still appreciate the early versions for their refined seating comfort and artisanal construction.
After restoration, this Concorde presents itself once again as intended: light, elegant, and surprisingly comfortable for a design that is now nearly sixty years old.
