An original Tolomeo by Artemide, marked with the cast-in Artemide logo in the center hinge. That detail is important: many copies of this lamp exist, and the mark in the casting is the way to recognize a genuine one. See the detail photo.
The Tolomeo appeared in 1987 and has never gone out of production since. The reason for this is the construction. Instead of springs or gas pressure cylinders, the balance here works with thin steel cables running along the arms — you push the lamp into position with one finger and it stays where you leave it, without anything needing to be secured or tightened. That mechanism, visible rather than concealed, makes the design.
Everything is made of aluminum. The arms are anodized, the shade is rotatable and tiltable so you can direct the light exactly where you need it, and the heavy ribbed base plate keeps the lamp stable even when the arm extends far out.
With a reach of over a meter, it covers an entire desk. Equally usable next to a reading chair or on a side table.
