1960s Swedish “Z” armchair with dark-lacquered geometric frame and black velvet upholstery.
The “Z” armchair designed by Bengt Ruda for Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1960s is a striking example of rigorous Scandinavian modernism. The side structure forms a sharp broken line shaping a clear “Z”, a bold almost architectural gesture that defines the entire composition and supports the seat and backrest with dynamic balance. The inclined profile enhances the relaxed seating position, while the integrated armrests flow seamlessly into the supporting frame, reinforcing the formal unity of the piece. A leading figure in post-war Swedish design and long-time creative director of Nordiska Kompaniet, Bengt Ruda pursued clarity of structure and legible construction.
